Tales of Dark (Gothic Doom Death Metal dalla Serbia)

("Fragile Monuments" ’06, e "Perdition Calls" ’09).

Cosa significa "U Kori Tame"?

In Europa?

Doom on!

Qui l'intervista in inglese:

1) Welcome and thank you for speaking with us. Can you introduce yourself, for our italian readers?
You are very welcome, it is my pleasure.
My name is Árpád Takács, and I am the male vocalist in Tales of Dark… We are a doom/death metal band from Novi Sad (Serbia), active for almost 13 years. By now we have two albums out (the first on Solitude Prod. and the second on BadMoodMen, both from Moscow, Russia), and we’re currently working on the material which is hopefully about to become our third full length.

2) I think that your monicker describes very well your music. In fact, every single song can be considered as a single dark and gloomy tale. What others meanings has got your monicker?

It could mean anything, really. There is no specific meaning behind it. I guess it depends on the imagination of the listeners, and that is what truly matters. The same goes for the songs themselves. I am not a storytelling type of a writer, my lyrics are rather just my random thoughts on paper, than real stories, and I think they have different meanings to different people, and that’s quite fine by me.

3) Can you introduce the story of the band, from the beginning to our days?

I’ll try to make the long story short. The band was founded by Kristijan Zavodski (our ex-guitarist) and Nikola Čavar (still on guitars today), in the fall of ’01. Since then we have been through several line-up changes, we made a demo (U Kori Tame ’03), and released two full length albums (Fragile Monuments ’06, and Perdition Calls ’09). In the early days we played a lot of gigs all over our homeland, but over the years the number of our live shows drastically decreased due to the constant line-up issues. At this moment we are on hold with playing live, but we have recruited a new drummer a few months ago, and have started to rehearse, so we plan to return on stage as soon as possible, but our main focus currently is on putting the third album together.

4) Well, I have found your video "Of Grandiose Fever and Passion Arcane" on YouTube and I've said that it's one of the most amazing video and song from Gothic Metal Scene. In fact, you are one of the few names, actually, playing the real Gothic Metal, with Doom influences. Some of the bands who create this genre of music, actually, don't play Gothic Metal, but other music genres, easier and "light"; Your music is really based on the first school of Gothic Metal: sad, gloomy, slow, heavy, growls vocals, angelic female vocals, lyrics full of poetry, theatrical mood. Are you agree with my opinion? I think that all the lovers of the Gothic Metal from the '90s, will love your music!

Thank you, I’m glad you like it.  I wrote “Of Grandiose Fevers…” shortly before I joined the guys in ToD (early ’02), and my intention was simply to write a good song, I didn’t speculate much about which category it will fit in. The initial idea was  to “squeeze” some folk elements into the classical epic doomy stuff, and spice it up with a bit of black/death atmosphere, so to me it is rather a mixture of styles/genres than simply a gothic metal song, but I don’t have a problem if people put it in the gothic  metal category.  It is the same thing with the style of ToD, some say we’re a doom band, some say we’re gothic  etc., but I guess none of it covers the truth entirely.  We prefer to say we play doom/death metal, but with a huge amount of various influences.

5) What is the meaning of the artwork of "Perdition Calls" and "Fragile Monuments"?

For the cover of Fragile Monuments, we used one of the paintings of a very talented artist called Ivan Roxas. I guess the artist himself would provide a better answer to your question, because I’m not really familiar with the meaning behind his work. We came across the painting online, and thought its overall atmosphere suits our music well, so we asked him if we can use it, and he was more than willing to cooperate.
For the Perdition Calls album we hired a well-known graphic designer named Havancsák Gyula (worked for Destruction,  Annihilator, Nightingale etc.) to make the entire cover/booklet design, and our music itself served him as inspiration for it.

6) You come from Serbia. Can you speak about the Metal scene, in particular about Gothic/Doom scene? I've liked a lots how your language sounds in "U Kori Tame"! I think that when a band chooses to sing in his mother language, the result will be better, and more interesting. Do you think that you will write another song in your language? Can you translate the meaning of "U Kori Tame" and the story about the song?

Since we are currently the only (as far as I know) doom-oriented band in Serbia, we can hardly speak about a doom/gothic  scene of any sort, but we have a couple of very good thrash/death/black metal bands around, as well as some non-metal acts. My personal favourites are Kozeljnik and The Stone (both  black metal) and Nekropolis ( technical thrash/death, our guitarist Davor plays bass for them). There are some bands (like Rain Delay and Consecration) that  play some very good atmospheric avant-garde music. The names I would also mention are Abonos (sympho/power with some goth influences), Bane and Khargash (death/black). I have done a guest appearance on Senium’s (funeral doom/death) first demo/single entitled “Remnant”, but I think they are no longer active. I also do vocals for Anguish Sublime, which is an atmospheric death metal project I co-founded in ’98. I personally would not agree that using mother language necessarily makes anyone’s music better or more interesting. It may sound exotic to someone who doesn’t speak that language, and in some cases it really sounds great (like Norwegian for example sounds pretty cool to me), but I guess it depends on the listeners personal taste too. I favourize English in this kind of music, in my opinion it suits metal the best.  The meaning of “U Kori Tame” is “In the Crust of Gloom”, and it was written by K. Zavodski, (like all the lyrics on the demo), and it deals with his personal anti-religious views. Back in ’07 we recorded another track in Serbian, for a compilation album which came out along with a book by Milan B. Popović , titled “Vreme Brutalnih Dobronamernika”.  We were asked by the poet to write music for one of his poems, so we chose “Prah” (translated as “Dust”).  You can even find on Youtube an unofficial video for that song, containing some old footage, all put together last year by K. Zavodski.

7) So, I love so much Poetry from all the world. From the East Europe, I have read some poets like Janez Menart, Josip Osti, Ivo Andric and Gezim Hajdari (from Albania). The most famous, I suppose, are the Poets from Slovakia and Hungary (Seifert, Radnòti, Halas, Holan...) Here in Italy I have found some books, about them; Can you speak about the Literature of your country?
My primary interest  is English literature, especially the works of John Milton, William Shakespeare, Edgar A. Poe, Roger Zelazny etc. Since my native language is Hungarian, I’m quite familiar with Arany, Petőfi, Radnóti, Ady  and so on. My favourite Serbian writer is Srdjan Krstić who is a contemporary novelist.

8) Have you already play live? In Europe?

Like I’ve said earlier, we played a lot back in the day (well, a lot compared to how much we play nowadays :D ), but managed to play abroad only one time. That gig took place in Sofia (Bulgaria) in ‘09. Apart from that, we were invited in ’10 to play on a festival in Ukraine, but the entire event was cancelled due to some political hassle in the country. But of course, we truly hope we’ll get the chance to play all over Europe some day. Supporting  some of our favourite bands on a nice European tour would be a real dream come true for us.

9) Do you think you will make some others videos, maybe about the landscapes from Serbia?

As soon as we finish the work on the new record, we are going to consider the possible options for the upcoming videos (I guess we’re going to make at least two of them for this album). This time, we would really like to shoot some high-quality videos with a professional crew, but unfortunately it all depends on the amount of money we can gather for it.

10) Finish as you like our interview!

Greetings to all our Italian fans, and to your readers! Thank you very much for your interest, it means a lot to us! Cheers and doom on! ;)
