Smargroth (Black Metal dalla Slovenia)

 

1) Ciao Ragazzi, benvenuti in Italia! Presentatevi e parlateci anche della vostra band...

Ciao! Un saluto a tutti i metal-heads italiani.
Ci presentiamo: la storia della band inizia alcuni anni fa, quando il fondatore del gruppo, con lo stesso nome, Smargroth, iniziò come one-man band circa 5 anni fa. Dopo essere stato un membro di alcune band Black e Death Metal, decise di mettersi in autonomia. Il primo album,"The Arrival of Necrotronian", è stato composto e pubblicato come progetto solista, con alcuni session members, ma dopo quell'album, si è formata una vera e propria band. Abbiamo iniziato a esibirci per tutta la Slovenia per circa un anno, e dopo, ci siamo presi una pausa, per registrare il nostro secondo cd, "Empyreal Cycle". Sfortunatamente, dopo quell'album, il batterista ha lasciato la band, cercando altre opportunità, così siamo alla ricerca di un nuovo batterista. Il livello che richiediamo è particolarmente elevato, e non tutti sanno suonare a quel modo. Comunque, mentre aspettiamo un batterista, stiamo lavorando al nostro terzo cd.


2) Smargroth: qual'è il significato del vostro monicker?

Le prime 5 lettere, Smarg, sono una combinazione delle lettere del vero nome del fondatore della band, ma suonava troppo "corto", così ha aggiunto "roth", che è un suffisso comune nella letteratura fantasy. Il fondatore, ha utilizzato questo nickname anche nel 2006, quando era chitarrista in un gruppo Black Metal, i Maleficus Angelus, dove suonò anche Garghuf (che ha suonato anche nei Gorgoroth e Nefarium). Quando ha cominciato a comporre canzoni, ha utilizzato lo stesso nome, che è stato mantenuto anche quando la band si è formata. Oggi pensiamo che "Smarg" possa bastare, ma per non creare confusione tra i nostri fans, manterremo il monicker completo.


3) Ho sentito qualche vostro pezzo su YouTube: se dovessi descrivervi a chi ancora non vi conosce, direi che siete ispirati soprattutto dai Dissection, con un piccolo tocco di Bathory. Siete d'accordo con questa mia definizione?

Siamo stati paragonati a molte band, tanto che abbiamo perso il conto... siamo tutti fans dei Dissection e dei Bathory, e sicuramente ci hanno influenzato, ma siamo stati paragonati anche a delle band che non conosciamo affatto. Sì, il nostro stile è un Epic Black Metal, forse anche "Fantasy". Con questo vorremmo dire che ci riteniamo fuori dal "mainstream" Black Metal; non amiamo i clichè, e vorremmo realizzare qualcosa di unico, senza copiare nessuno...e se ciò accade, è solo accidentale. Anche il nostro modo di suonare dal vivo non è ortodosso, secondo i canoni Black. Ci piace impersonare un'attitudine che si rifà ai temi epici del nostro concept.


4) Parlateci dei vostri due album: "The Arrival of Nectrotronian"(2009) e "Empyreal Cycle" (2011).

Il primo album era un mix di differenti canzoni, anche perchè alcune di esse sono state composte senza un intento serio. Successivamente, quando abbiamo visto crescere l'interesse dei fans attorno a noi, le tematiche e le lyrics sono state create successivamente, con più impegno e professionalità. Anche se la qualità sonora è un po' da "Home Recording", è stato considerato un buon album, perchè diamo molta importanza all'impatto e all'energia. Il secondo album è stato prodotto più professionalmente, così suona più compatto e lineare.
Le canzoni sono maggiormente orientate alla potenza del sound, con una compenente anche "melodica". Sono più oscure rispetto alle nostre prime song, più drammatiche e "mature". Col secondo album abbiamo trovato il nostro sound e stile di riferimento. Entrambi gli album sono stati autoprodotti e limitati a 200 copie, perchè non vogliamo obbedire alle logiche delle labels.


5) Mi piace molto la copertina di "Empyreal Cycle": sembra una sorta di mostro-guerriero. Per caso i vostri album sono dei concept? E che tematiche trattano i vostri testi?

Entrambi gli album hanno lo stesso concept. Abbiamo creato la nostra storia fantasy, una mitologia che parte dalla creazione del mondo, con una profezia nel finale. In questa mitologia, non ci sono personaggi buoni e cattivi, ma tutti sono buoni e cattivi allo stesso tempo. La storia ruota principalmente attorno a concetti come avidità, arroganza, destino inevitabile, la forza del combattimento tra gli elementi della natura, e argomenti simili, in un mondo in cui a fronteggiarsi sono maghi, che cercano di sconfiggere la forza opposta, rappresentata da Demoni. Tutte le canzoni sono capitoli sequenziali che raccontano questa storia epica. Il primo album presentava questa storia dall'inizio alla fine, mentre il secondo album chiarisce alcuni capitoli del primo album. Immaginate il primo album, che racconti i capitoli 1, 3, 5 ... e il secondo album che invece tratta i capitoli 2, 4, 6 ... Il terzo album racconterà la storia dal punto in cui il secondo album si è concluso. In un paio d'anni, i nostri tre cd sembreranno una sorta libro, che racconterà la nostra storia nel dettaglio. La copertina del primo album rappresenta un momento del nostro concept, il primo scontro di una guerra mortale, dove i maghi riuscirono a guadagnare Il loro potere. Il secondo album invece illustra quando i maghi hanno perso il loro potere, quando i Demoni sono riusciti a ribellarsi. Anche le immagini dei libretti interni mostrano altri momenti del nostro concept, e ogni immagine è connessa alla tematica e al feeling di ciascuna canzone.


6) Avete già suonato live al di fuori della Slovenia? Ho visto le vostre foto con Nargaroth!

Purtroppo non abbiamo avuto la possibilità di suonare al di fuori della Slovenia. Stavamo progettando un tour per l'Europa, ma per alcuni motivi, non siamo riusciti a organizzarci.Quando eravamo vicinissimi a farlo, abbiamo perso il batterista. La Slovenia è piccola, quindi tutti conoscono tutti. Visto che consideriamo la nostra musica senza confini, ci piace l'idea di diffonderla in tutto il mondo. Infatti, abbiamo venduto la maggior parte dei CD al di fuori della Slovenia. Per lo più in Europa, Canada, Stati Uniti e Giappone. Nargaroth ha suonato in Slovenia nel 2009, e noi eravamo il gruppo di supporto. Era il nostro primo concerto, e la sala da concerto era strapiena di gente.


7) Avete mai pensato di cantare nella vostra lingua madre, lo sloveno? L'Inglese è ok... ma preferisco quelle band che decidono di cantare nella loro lingua madre: è molto più interessante spaziare e poter sentire lingue straniere! Per fare qualche esempio, ci sono due Gothic Metal band che cantano in Polacco (i Closterkeller) e i Tales of Dark, che in "U Kori Tame" hanno cantato in Serbo. Gli Art Diktator, un gruppo Industrial, cantano in Turco! Molte band dal Sudamerica, come i peruviani Anal Vomit o i colombiani Esbbat cantano in spagnolo; anche in Italia abbiamo avuto band che utilizzano l'italiano. Per esempio, in ambito Black, il primo demo dei Nefarium era interamente cantato nella nostra lingua. La Slovenia è famosa per i Laibach; adoro il loro primo album e mi piace davvero l'effetto che fa la vostra lingua madre in "Drzava"! Penso che lo Sloveno si adatti molto bene agli stili musicali estremi.

Beh, questa è una decisione difficile. La lingua slovena, anche se è molto bella e noi siamo orgogliosi della nostra cultura, potrebbe non essere abbastanza poetica, e il canto in lingua slovena, dal nostro punto di vista, non sembra molto serio. Probabilmente a causa di molte canzoni pop stupide, che passano alla radio nazionale. Avendo messo un sacco di attenzione e impegno al concept dei nostri album, abbiamo deciso di utilizzare in inglese, così gli ascoltatori possono facilmente capire i nostri testi. E' possibile che faremo una o due canzoni bonus sul prossimo album, e le canteremo in sloveno, ma la maggior parte delle canzoni saranno in lingua inglese. Tuttavia, abbiamo in progetto di fare una variante slovena del secondo album, che sarà pubblicato on-line. I Laibach sono una band davvero buona, e qui sono davvero di culto. Ma dal momento che la Slovenia è così piccola, la maggior parte delle band, anche i Laibach, devono fare almeno delle canzoni in inglese, quanto basta per ottenere un riconoscimento all'estero. In Slovenia, siete veramente rispettati, se prima guadagnate abbastanza anche negli altri paesi.


8) Ulverbite, vorrei dire ai nostri lettori italiani, che sul tuo canale YouTube, hai postato una canzone di in gruppo ormai introvabile: gli Azure, del 1998! Penso che molti dei nostri lettori saranno felici di saperlo!

Sì, sono un grande fan del Black Metal anni '90. Quello era il periodo dove la Scandinavia guidava l'intera scena Black, e quelli che più mi piaceva ascoltare erano proprio gli Azure, che non erano "mainstream", e secondo me, erano davvero sottostimati, rispetto ad altre band. (da noi girarono un paio di volte con due recensioni su Metal Hammer e GrindZone, nota di Lunaria). Due anni fa, ho avuto l'idea di metterli su Youtube, anche perchè nessuno li aveva postati...così ho messo la mia canzone preferita, per onorare questa grandissima band, e fare in modo che fosse conosciuta.

1) Hello Guyz and Welcome in Italy! Let's introduce yourself with a small bio of the band!

Hello! Greeting to the Italian metal-heads.
The story of the band goes long ago, when the founder of the band with the same name, Smargroth, started as a one-man band around 5 years ago. After being a member of some other black and death metal bands, he decided it was time to make own music. The first album, The Arrival of Necrotronian was made and released as a one-man band with session members, but after the release, full band was formed. We started to perform the concerts over Slovenia for a year, and after that we made a pause to record our second album, Empyreal Cycle. Unfortunately soon after the release, the drummer left the band, seeking other opportunities in his life, so we are in a search for the new drummer for quite a while. The drumming style is very difficult, and not many drummers can perform it. While waiting for the drummer, we are starting to make the third album.


2) Smargroth: what is the meaning of this monicker?

The first 5 letters, Smarg, are a combination of the letters of the real life name of the band founder, but as it sounded too short at that time, “roth” was added, which was quite a common suffix in the fantasy inspired world. He took this name as a stage name in 2006, when he was still a guitarist in the black metal band Maleficus Angelus, where Garghuf (the former session drummer of Gorgoroth and Nefarium) also played. When started to do own songs, he re-used the same name, which stayed even when the full band was formed. Today we are thinking, that just “Smarg” would be enough, but the name will stay, to avoid confusion between the fans.


3) I have listened your music on YouTube: your music style is an
Epic Black Metal, similar as Dissection with a small touch of Bathory. Are you agree with this definition?

We have been compared to so many bands, that we lost the tracking . We all here are fans of Dissection and Bathory, so they probably had some influence on our music, but we have been also compared to the bands, which none of us ever heard of. Yes, our style definitely is epic black metal, maybe even a fantasy black metal. With this, we are somehow differing from the “mainstream” black metal.
We don’t like cliches, so we also don’t like copying anybody else. Every similarity with the other bands is just accidental. Even our stage appearance is somehow non-orthodox. We rather like to look like the actors in our own epic story.


4) Speak about your first and second cd: "The Arrival of Nectrotronian"(2009) and  "Empyreal Cycle" (2011).

The first album is more or less mix of different songs, as half of those songs were at first made without a serious intent. Later, when enough interest from the first few fans was shown, the thematics and the lyrics were created and the second half of the songs were made. Even if the album has a slight “home recording” etiquete, it was well received, because of the fast and energetic songs.
The second album was produced as a whole, so it sounds more compact and linear. The songs are still powerful, but have more ambient inside. They are darker than the first album, more dramatic and “mature”. With the second album we also “found” our sound and the style.
Both albums were self-released in a limited series of 200 CD, as we
don’t want to rely on and “obey” different labels.


5) I like the cover artwork of "Empyreal Cycle": it is a sort of monster-warrior. Are your albums concept-albums? What are the argoments you write to, in your textes?

Both the albums have one and the same concept. We created our own fantastic story, a mythology starting with the creation of the world, and also with the prophecy about the ending. In this mythology, there are no real good and bad guys, but everyone is good and bad at the same time.
The story is narrating about the greed, arrogance, inevitable fate, fighting the forces of the nature and similar, in the world where the wizards are ruling with magic and the demons are still a major opposing force.
All the songs are the sequential chapters telling this epic story. The first album presented this story from the beginning to the end, while the second album is presenting and additionaly clarifying the story between the chapters of the first album. Imagine the first album telling the chapters 1, 3, 5... and the second album telling the chapters 2, 4, 6... The third album will tell the story from the point where the both albums ended. In a couple of years, there will most likely be a book telling the story in details.
The cover art of the first album is depicting the moment some years after a deadly war, where the wizards gained their power. The second album is showing the moment, when the wizards lost their power, as the demons returned. The internal graphic art of the both albums is also strongly connected to the songs, each picture has some association with the corresponding song thematics and the feeling.


6) Have you already play lives, out of Slovenia? I have seen your photos with Nargaroth!

Unfortunately we haven’t had a chance yet to play outside of Slovenia. We were planning a tour around Europe, but it wasn’t realized because of the different reasons. When we finally got a chance, we lost the drummer.
Slovenia is small, so everybody knows everybody. As our music is border-less, we like to present it around the world. In fact, we sold most of our CDs outside of Slovenia. Mostly to Europe, Canada, USA and Japan.
Nargaroth had a concert in Slovenia in 2009, where we were the supporting act. It was our first concert, and the concert room was
full to the last corner.


7) Do you think you will decide to sing in your language? English is good, but... I support those bands who decided to sing in the language of their contries. I like so much listen "strange languages!" For example, Gothic Metal bands like Closterkeller sing in polish and Tales of Dark, from Serbia, have sung in their language in "U Kori Tame"; Art Diktator, an industrial band, sing in turkish! Bands from South America, for example the peruvianan band Anal Vomit or Esbbat (from Colombia), sing in spanish; in Italy too, we have some bands who decide to use italian! For example, the first demo of Nefarium, a Black Metal band, was all singed in italian! Slovenia is famous for Laibach. I love their first album! I like so much the effect of your language in "Drzava"! I think that this language is really good for extreme music style!

Well, this is a tough decision. Slovenian language, although beautiful and we are proud of it, might not be poetic enough, and singing in Slovenian, by our opinion, doesn’t sound very serious. Probably because of many stupid pop songs, heard on the national radio. As we put a lot of focus to the story of our albums, we decided to present it in English, so the listeners can easily understand it. It is possible, that we’ll make a bonus song or two on the next album in Slovenian language, but most of the songs will have to be in English. There was also a plan, which is still actual, to make a Slovenian variant of the second album, which would be released online.
Laibach is a very good band, with a cult status here. But as Slovenia is so small and has a small population, most of the bands, even Laibach, have to make at least some songs also in English, just to get enough recognition abroad. In Slovenia, you are really respected only, if you first gain enough respect in the other countries.


8) Ulverbite, I'd like to say to our italian readers than on your channel, you have uploaded the rare band Azure, from 1998! I think that some of our readers will like this news!

I am a big fan of 90´es black metal music. Those were the times when Scandinavia was leading force in black metal scene and one band that I enjoyed listning were Swedish Azure, band that wasn't recognized as a mainstream black metal and was in my opion underestimated by the scene in general. Two years ago I had a flashback about that band and I coulnd't find any of the songs from their debut album on YouTube so I decided to upload one of their songs myself to honour that great band and help make it known to broader audience.
